Torrington, WY September 25th, 2023 — The September Catalogue Feed Report has been released, and Western Ag Network’s Lane Nordlund says it came with “a sigh of relief” for area producers.

On the Daybreak Ag Report, Nordlund talked with USDA Livestock Analyst Mike McConnell.

“On September 1st, there were 11.1 million cattle on feed, which is 2% lower than a year ago. During the month of August, 2 million head of cattle were placed on feed, which is 5% lower than the previous year. 1.9 million head of cattle were marketed from feedlots, which is about 6% lower than the year before.”

Nordlund says that the report should be viewed as another favorable report as no surprises were found.

DTN Livestock Analyst ShayLe Stewart says that the report is favorable for cow/calf producers.

“When looking to the fall feeder cattle run that’s expected to take off in the next couple of weeks, Friday’s data should be viewed as encouraging news to cow/calf producers. Their calves should be worth considerably more than what they sold for a year ago.”

Nordlund also talked about DDG prices on today’s Ag Report.

“The average price for DDGs from 33 locations are higher at $196 per ton – $2 higher than one week ago. DDG prices were mixed, but higher on average given the weakness in corn for the week. The national corn index is down $0.13 versus one week ago.”
