Torrington, WY (by Kyler Clark) February 12th, 2024 — The Eastern Wyoming College Mens and Womens Basketball teams each played host to two conference opponents at home this weekend.

On Friday night, the Lady Lancers came out swinging against Central Wyoming College, building a 47-17 halftime lead. They kept the pace in the second half, keeping their lead around 30 and finished the game winning 83-51. The Lady Lancers had four girls score in double figures, led by freshmen Luna Moreno and Ali Tripp who both had 17 points and three 3-point field goals a piece. Sophomore Hailey Long had a well rounded game as well with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

The mens game was a low scoring battle through the first 20 minutes, the score was 31-18 favoring CWC going into the locker room. The Lancers battled back in the second half at one point cutting the deficit to 39-35, but the visiting Rustlers pulled away and won. Final Score, CWC 71 EWC 59. Henos Fitwi led the Lancers with 12 points, and Sam Marbury of the visiting Rustlers led all scorers with 30.

Luna Moreno led the scoring again with 15 points, Tawny Rodriguez had 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and Hailey Long had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

In the following men’s game, the lancers battled with a good Northwest College team and found themselves down 51-43 at the break. The second half was just as much of a battle, and the Lancers took their first lead of the second half at 77-74 with just over 6 minutes to go. The Trappers proceeded to go on a 17-4 scoring run over the next 5 minutes, and led 91-81 with 30 seconds to go. From there, Mahkhiah Tarver drilled two three pointers and Nick Kwokam Ngomo made one to cut the lead to 93-90. The Trappers made two free throws and the Lancers miracle comeback was cut short. Final Score, NWC 95 EWC 90.

The Lancers are now 4-20 and 1-7 in conference play, last place in NJCAA region IX north. The Lady Lancers improve to 12-13 overall, 6-2 in conference play. That is second behind only Casper College in region IX north. The Lancers next game will be in Cheyenne against Laramie County Community College on Saturday, February 17th.
