Ft. Laramie, WY (by Cindy Sheeley) May 13th, 2024 — While the days of seeing cavalry horses and soldiers at Fort Laramie National Historic Site is mostly in the past, on special occasions visitors get the opportunity to see history come to life. On Saturday, May 11th the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (OVC) held a drill event at the fort where they practiced drills, fighting on foot, rallying, and skirmishing.

The 111th OVC is a group of passionate historians who specialize in researching history and reenacting historical drills and events. Each rider and horse in the group are typically sporting historically accurate uniforms and equipment. The mission of the group is to encourage youth to engage with their local history.

This group is based off of a real historical military unit, the 11th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Calvary, that was often stationed at Fort Laramie.

During the event, visitors could watch the riders or stop them to ask questions.
