Torrington, WY August 30, 2023 — The Torrington Police Department is warning email users in the area to be aware of scams targeting community members.

According to TPD, the suspects are attempting to defraud victims in our community by pretending to be the leader of a targeted organization, and then sending emails to members of the organization using a fictitious email address that closely resembles the leader’s real email.

The email messages have been personal in nature, and ask the intended victim to do a “favor” or handle a “request” for the leader by purchasing gift cards and providing the information on the cards to the suspect.

If you receive a request of this nature, TPD highly encourages you to NOT respond to the message, contact the REAL person, who you believed to have sent the email, and confirm whether it is a valid request.
